Uzbekistan to receive €20 million from EU for agricultural reforms
02 May 2024

Uzbekistan is set to receive €20 million in grants from the European Union to facilitate agricultural reforms. The EU has already allocated the first tranche of €6 million to support dekhkan farms. This initiative aligns with Uzbekistan's National Strategy for Food Security and Healthy Eating, aiming to establish a market-oriented, sustainable agricultural and food sector.

The funds will aid in enhancing the capabilities of family farms, which play a crucial role in supplying meat and vegetables to Uzbek consumers. The reforms focus on enabling these farms to thrive, adapt to climate change, uphold environmental standards, produce nutritious food, and integrate into local and global value chains. EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Charlotte Adrian, highlighted the importance of these reforms for ensuring the prosperity of peasant farms.

Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture will receive technical assistance to plan and implement agricultural reforms effectively. This support is part of the EU's multi-year indicative program for Uzbekistan, which commenced in 2021 and has already provided €76 million to the country. By the end of 2025, the EU plans to allocate a total of €20 million towards Uzbekistan's agricultural development strategy, further bolstering its efforts in this crucial sector.
