Strengthening Wheat Productivity, Climate Resilience, and Seed Sector Development: IOFS Seminar, Training, and Dialogue in Pakistan
04 March 2025

The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), in collaboration with leading research institutions, organized a Wheat Traveling Seminar, Hands-on Training, and International Conference on "WHEAT for Climate and Food System Resilience" in Pakistan to enhance scientific collaboration and strengthen wheat productivity across OIC member states.

  • Field Visits (Feb 24-27): Experts from Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Türkiye, and Uzbekistan visited farms in Lodhran, Multan, Pirowal, and Khanewal, gaining insights into hybrid wheat adaptation, mechanization, and precision sowing techniques. These visits provided practical exposure to advanced wheat breeding technologies and sustainable farming practices.
  • Conference (Feb 25-26, Faisalabad): Hosted at AARI and UAF, the event brought together wheat breeders, researchers, and policymakers to discuss climate-smart agriculture, food security challenges, and innovative solutions. Prof. Dr. Richard Trethowan (University of Sydney) presented on wheat breeding innovations and sector analysis, while Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali (IOFS) highlighted wheat’s role in food system transformation. Experts from IOFS member states shared national strategies and best practices.
  • Strategic Collaboration: A Commitments of Cooperation (CoC) was signed between IOFS member countries and Pakistan’s Wheat Research Institute (WRI) and Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute (ABRI) to enhance wheat breeding research, climate-resilient agriculture, and knowledge exchange. The events reinforced IOFS’s commitment to food security, climate adaptation, and agricultural innovation, promoting research partnerships and practical solutions to enhance wheat productivity in the face of climate challenges.
  • Dialogue on Seed Sector Development (Feb 28): The IOFS delegation participated in a high-level dialogue on developing a competitive seed sector to enhance agricultural productivity, organized in collaboration with Pakistan’s National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority and the Special Investment Facilitation Council. The event brought together policymakers, researchers, academia, and industry stakeholders to discuss key challenges and opportunities for strengthening the seed sector. Experts highlighted the importance of quality seed systems, hybrid seed development, biotechnology, and seed certification standards in improving crop yields and resilience to climate change. The dialogue emphasized policy reforms, public-private partnerships, and increased investment in seed research and development. The IOFS delegation reiterated its commitment to supporting countries in strengthening their seed industries through knowledge-sharing, capacity-building programs, and cross-border collaborations.

These activities reflect IOFS’s dedication to enhancing agricultural innovation, food security, and sustainable growth. By fostering international collaboration and focusing on key areas like wheat productivity and seed sector development, the IOFS aims to help OIC member states tackle climate challenges and ensure food system resilience.
