In the midst of conflict in Sudan, which has led to the largest displacement crisis globally, a photo series celebrates the resilience of farmers who continue to cultivate against formidable odds to feed their families and the nation. Despite the challenges of a catastrophic economic crisis, market disruptions, and critical input shortages, smallholder farmers play a crucial role in maintaining food security in Sudan.
The country, once considered the future breadbasket for East Africa, is now facing a hunger crisis, with nearly 18 million people in crisis or worse levels of hunger. To support these farmers, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supplied 1 million farming households, encompassing 5 million people, with 10,000 tonnes of seeds across 16 out of 18 states in Sudan.
The FAO expresses gratitude to the Governments of Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United States of America, as well as the Central Emergency Response Fund and Sudan Humanitarian Fund, for their generous support in ensuring agricultural resilience during these challenging times.
