On March 29 and 30, 2024, heavy rainfall wreaked havoc across Afghanistan, resulting in the destruction of more than 1,500 acres of agricultural land and causing severe damage to over 540 homes and critical infrastructure across seven provinces. The most affected provinces include Faryab in the Northern region, Nangarhar in the Eastern region, and Daikundi in the Central Highlands region. This marks the third instance of flooding in the Northern region within a month, with previous events resulting in casualties and significant displacement.
As of March 30, there have been no reports of displacement due to the floods. However, the situation remains dire, with forecasts predicting further precipitation in the coming days. Humanitarian partners, including the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), are closely monitoring the situation and preparing to assist affected families across the affected areas.
In Faryab province, nearly 400 homes have been severely damaged, hindering access to some districts due to infrastructure collapse. Similarly, in Daikundi province, flash floods have destroyed homes, impacted agricultural land, and damaged infrastructure. In Nangarhar province, heavy rainfall has affected numerous families, causing injuries and extensive damage to property and crops.
Furthermore, other regions, such as Uruzgan, Nuristan, Parwan, Baghlan, Badakhshan, and Takhar, have also experienced significant damage to homes, agricultural land, and infrastructure due to the floods. Humanitarian organizations are mobilizing assessment teams and providing immediate support, including food, shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene services, to affected households.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing assessments and responses aimed at addressing the urgent needs of affected communities and mitigating further risks posed by the ongoing rainfall and flooding.
