IOFS Welcomes Foreign Minister of Benin to Headquarters in Astana

Astana, Kazakhstan – 18 April 2025 – The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) had the honor of receiving H.E. Mr. Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Benin, at its headquarters in Astana. The visit marked a significant milestone in strengthening the bilateral partnership between IOFS and Benin in the fields of food security and sustainable agriculture.In his welcoming remarks, H.E. Ambassador Berik Aryn, Director General of IOFS, emphasized the agricultural potential of Benin and its key role in enhancing regional food systems in West Africa. He highlighted that Benin’s favorable climate and vast arable lands position the country as a strategic partner in advancing IOFS’s mission of achieving sustainable food security across OIC Member States.Key areas of discussion included the development of climate-resilient agriculture, technology transfer, irrigation infrastructure, and the strengthening of food value chains, particularly in rice and cassava production. IOFS also proposed the establishment of a joint technical working group to develop a roadmap for cooperation tailored to Benin’s national priorities.

H.E. Minister Bakari welcomed the opportunity to deepen collaboration with IOFS and commended the Organization for its vital role in strengthening food security across Africa. He emphasized the strategic importance of cassava as a staple crop in Benin’s food system and a driver of rural development and economic resilience, expressing appreciation for IOFS’s support in developing the cassava value chain. The Minister also shared his insights and outlined Benin’s national priorities in the agricultural sector, including climate adaptation, youth empowerment, and value chain development, highlighting areas where IOFS’s support would be most impactful.Concluding the meeting, Ambassador Aryn formally invited the Republic of Benin to participate in the 7th General Assembly of IOFS, scheduled for 1–2 July 2025 in Astana. He expressed hope that Benin’s participation at the ministerial level would enrich the discussions and further solidify its leadership role in regional food security efforts.
