Dakar, Senegal – 7–10 April 2025 — The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) reaffirmed its strong commitment to fostering collaboration with African member states and international organizations at a key high-level forum held in Dakar, Senegal. Ambassador Berik Aryn, Director General of IOFS, emphasized the critical importance of working together to address the pressing challenges of food security and sustainable agriculture in the region.
To represent the IOFS at this significant event, Ambassador Aryn delegated Dr. Ismail AbdelHamid, Director of the Projects Department, who participated in the forum from April 8 to 10, 2025. Dr. Abdelhamid highlighted the essential role of collaborative efforts in enhancing agricultural resilience and advancing irrigation strategies across the Sahel region.
The forum’s main objective was to accelerate the development of sustainable irrigated agriculture in the Sahel while fostering food sovereignty and improving nutrition. Discussions during the event focused on strengthening agricultural practices, enhancing food security, and advancing irrigation projects—all of which are crucial for achieving sustainable development in the region.
A key takeaway from the forum was the urgent need for enhanced irrigated agriculture. The participating countries underscored their commitment to improving irrigation infrastructure, optimizing water management, and promoting innovative agricultural technologies. The declaration issued at the forum outlines an ambitious agenda for expanding irrigated land and strengthening regional agricultural cooperation.
During the forum, Dr. Abdelhamid had the opportunity to meet with His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Niger and the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Gambia. These discussions provided valuable insights into ongoing cooperation between the IOFS and these countries, strengthening the Organization's partnerships in the region.
The IOFS remains committed to supporting its member states in their efforts to achieve food security and build agricultural resilience through strategic partnerships and collaborative initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges of the Sahel and beyond.
