IOFS Strengthens Collaborative Ties with Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty

Almaty, Kazakhstan, 19 July 2024 – The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) delegation, represented by Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali, Director of Programs and Projects Department, visited Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The visit aimed to explore the research and science potential of KazNU for the benefit of the Islamic world and to explore opportunities and modalities to foster collaboration between the IOFS and the University.

During the visit, the delegation toured several key facilities at KazNU, including the KazNU Museum, which showcases the university’s historical achievements, contributions of leadership, and growth, and the KazNU Library, housing an extensive collection of books on science, arts, history, law, and more.

The delegation also visited several laboratories, including the China-Kazakhstan Joint Laboratory for Remote Sensing Technologies and Applications, Sustainable Development and Environmental Management Research Center labs, and others focused on digital cartography, water resources, soil physics and chemistry, SDGs, environmental sustainability, and bioresources.

Discussions during the visit focused on future plans for collaborative work and implementation. The delegation familiarized themselves with ongoing research projects at KazNU, with a particular interest in biotechnology, agriculture, and sustainable development.

Furthermore, they explored research aimed at increasing crop yields and resistance to adverse environmental conditions. University scientists showcased their achievements in developing new fertilizers for agricultural crops, which can significantly boost productivity and ensure stable food supplies in regions with challenging climatic conditions. Additionally, advancements in organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices were presented, highlighting their potential for adaptation and implementation in IOFS Member States.

Educational and personnel training issues were also a key focus. Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali emphasized the importance of training highly qualified specialists capable of addressing complex food security challenges. Discussions included opportunities for joint educational programs, internships, and exchanges of students and teachers in IOFS member countries.

Expressing deep gratitude to the young scientists of KazNU for their warm welcome and fruitful discussions, the Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali emphasized that such visits not only facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience but also help establish strong ties between scientific communities of different countries. They expressed confidence that joint efforts will lead to significant achievements in food security and sustainable development.

At the conclusion of the visit, the IOFS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting KazNU's scientific and educational initiatives aimed at solving global challenges. The delegation expressed hope that further cooperation will lead to the development of innovative solutions and technologies that will help ensure food security and improve the quality of life for people worldwide.
