IOFS Delegation Expands Multi-Sectoral Collaborations to Bolster Food Security and Agricultural Resilience in Afghanistan
05 March 2025

Kabul, Afghanistan  5 March 2025— The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) continues to advance its role in addressing Afghanistan’s urgent food security needs under the “Afghanistan Food Security Program (AFSP which was launched following the 17th Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) on the Humanitarian Situation in Afghanistan (December 2021, Islamabad) entrusting  IOFS with a comprehensive mandate to strengthen agricultural resilience and meet immediate humanitarian needs across multiple Afghan districts.

Building upon the success of AFSP interventions in Herat and Zindejan, the IOFS delegation arrived in Afghanistan during the Holy Month of Ramadan to further the Advancing Wheat Cultivation for Sustainable Development in Central Afghanistan project in Logar Province. The mission focused on enhancing stakeholder collaboration—engaging government officials, private sector leaders, and local communities—to ensure that sustainable agricultural practices are scaled across different regions.

The IOFS delegation commenced its official program with a visit to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation. Discussions centered on the importance of expanding agricultural training programs, particularly in post-harvest management, as well as initiatives to revitalize the sector through model farms and pilot projects.

The IOFS delegation further engaged with representatives of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) to strengthen business partnerships and foster investment in the agriculture sector. Building on discussions from the First Business Forum in 2023, plans were outlined for the Second Afghanistan Business Forum, to be held in collaboration with the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), alongside the Fourth Edition of the Imam Abu Hanifa International Trade Exhibition in October 2025.

As part of its mission, the IOFS delegation visited Paktia Province, where agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy. Meetings with provincial officials, extension officers, and farming communities highlighted critical challenges such as soil degradation, water scarcity, limited access to modern farming techniques, and the need for improved infrastructure.

Looking ahead, the IOFS will continue working closely with Afghanistan’s government, private sector, and local communities to expand support programs and training initiatives. The upcoming launch of the Advancing Wheat Cultivation for Sustainable Development in Central Afghanistan project in Logar Province marks another step toward strengthening agricultural productivity and ensuring long-term food security.
