IOFS and SESRIC Successfully Conclude Training Course on

Astana, Kazakhstan – The Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS), in partnership with the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), successfully held a two-day online training course titled “Zero Waste Strategies for a Greener Future” on 16–17 July 2025. The course was organized under the framework of the IOFS–SESRIC Agreed Activities as part of the ACMOI Matrix and brought together participants from across the OIC region.

The training provided a platform for knowledge exchange on circular economy principles, sustainable waste management, and innovative practices for reducing food and environmental waste. Delivered in English through a video conferencing platform, the sessions followed a synchronous learning model, offering interactive discussions and expert-led presentations.

The course opened with remarks by Dr. Shahlo Atabaeva, Programme Manager at IOFS, and Dr. Atilla Karaman, Director of Training and Technical Cooperation at SESRIC, who both emphasized the importance of collective efforts in building greener and more resilient agrifood systems across OIC Member States.

Among the distinguished speakers nominated by IOFS were:

  • Hisham Estawi (Egypt), who spoke on the role of the circular economy in shaping a sustainable future;
  • Suat Atan (Türkiye), who introduced the IOFS Database & Data Analytics for food security and waste reduction;
  • Hussein F. Hassan (Lebanon), who presented innovative approaches to food waste management under the theme "From Waste to Worth."

The second day of the course featured sessions on academic leadership in zero-waste strategies, as well as tech-driven innovations in Indonesia’s waste management ecosystem, delivered by leading experts from Pakistan and Indonesia.
