IOFS and Iraq Strengthen Climate-Smart Agriculture Policy Framework Through National Workshop in Baghdad
13 February 2026
Baghdad, Iraq - From 9–12 February 2026, the Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS), in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Iraq, successfully conducted a four-day national workshop in Baghdad, under the theme, “Strengthening the Policy and Institutional Framework for Climate-Smart Agriculture to Improve Soil Health and Combat Desertification in Iraq.”

The workshop brought together high-level representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, as well as members of legal and legislative bodies, academic institutions, research centers, and national experts from across Iraq.

Throughout the four days, the participants engaged in policy-oriented technical sessions, interactive working groups, and a study visit to the National Center for Organic Agriculture. The sessions addressed challenges related to soil degradation, climate vulnerabilities, and desertification while highlighting the need for comprehensive legislative and institutional reform.

The workshop concluded with the preparation of key recommendations, to be submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant national institutions, aimed at supporting Iraq’s transition towards a sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural system.

This activity is part of IOFS’s broader Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under its Vision 2031 and demonstrates its continued commitment to building member states’ capacity in facing food security challenges through strategic governance, institutional reform, and technical innovation.
