IOFS and IOM Discuss Cooperation on Migration, Agriculture, and Food Security with Focus on Kyrgyzstan
29 January 2026

Astana, Kazakhstan – The Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS) hosted a delegation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at its Headquarters on 28 January 2026, within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two organizations. The meeting brought together IOM representatives from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to present ongoing activities in Central Asia and explore concrete areas for cooperation.

The IOM delegation highlighted its work in Kyrgyzstan, with a focus on improving migration governance, supporting the reintegration of returning migrants, and promoting safer and more regular labor migration through cooperation with government partners and the use of digital services. Particular attention was drawn to the situation of Afghan refugees in the country, including challenges related to legal status, access to social services, and durable settlement solutions, as well as ongoing efforts to strengthen reintegration and protection mechanisms.

The parties discussed potential collaboration in Kyrgyzstan, including support for migrants returning from the United Kingdom’s seasonal agricultural programmes, the use of agriculture as a livelihood and reintegration tool, and initiatives aimed at peacebuilding and social cohesion in border areas. IOFS proposed expanding its Women Agriculture Development Initiative (WADI) in Central Asia, with Kyrgyzstan considered as a potential pilot country, particularly for women returning from seasonal agricultural employment abroad.
