IOFS Advances Regional Cooperation to Reduce Post-Harvest Fish Losses in Fisheries and Aquaculture
24 October 2025

Trabzon, Turkiye - 21-22 October 2025 l As part of the OIC Healthy, Halal, and Safe Food Ecosystem initiative, the Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS), in collaboration with the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry – Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), with the valuable support of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), successfully organized the Workshop on Sharing the Experiences of GFCM Countries in Post-Harvest Fish Loss Reduction on 21–22 October 2025 in Trabzon, Türkiye.

The workshop gathered policymakers, fisheries officials, and experts from OIC Member States, including Türkiye, Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon, and Syria, as well as representatives from GFCM, FAO, and other international organizations.

Participants discussed the state of fish losses and waste management practices across capture fisheries and aquaculture value chains in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. They also explored innovative measures to minimize post-harvest losses, including circular-economy approaches, smart cold-chain systems, and value-added processing of aquatic by-products.

This collaborative initiative reaffirms IOFS’s leadership as the OIC specialized institution dedicated to promoting sustainable food systems, capacity development, and regional cooperation. The outcomes directly support the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 2, 12, 14, and 17) — building a healthy, halal, and safe food ecosystem for all.
