Food Safety News: African countries to get help with food safety in informal sector
12 June 2024

The African Union (AU) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) are collaborating to develop guidelines aimed at enhancing food safety across the informal sector in Africa. This framework seeks to address the unique realities of African food systems and improve government engagement with informal food sectors to ensure safer food practices. Through consultations with stakeholders in the informal sector, including member states, the guidelines will be refined over the next few years before being presented to the African Union policy bodies for approval in 2025. The initiative comes at a critical time, with previous analysis revealing significant health and economic impacts from foodborne illnesses in Africa, highlighting the need for increased investment in food safety projects. The guidelines focus on three key principles: recognizing, engaging with, and investing in the informal sector, acknowledging that traditional Western approaches to food safety may not be suitable for Africa's informal food markets. By offering a tailored roadmap for governments and stakeholders, the guidelines aim to inspire practical actions toward improved food safety management in the informal sector, aligning with the African Union's Food Safety Strategy for Africa and leveraging ILRI's expertise in the field. This collaborative effort holds the potential to transform the informal food sector, ensuring safer and more sustainable food practices for the African population.
