The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has pledged a USD12 million grant to support investment companies operating in agricultural sectors across eastern Sudan, specifically in Gedaref, Kassala, and Port Sudan. Coordinated by Moaz Osman of the African Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF), the project aims to finance 60 crop farming, livestock farming, and renewable energy initiatives. Speaking at the Sudan SME Catalyser event in Kampala, Uganda, organized by AECF and 249Startups, Osman disclosed that the grant will be distributed among 50 projects receiving between USD50,000 to USD250,000, and 10 projects receiving between USD250,000 and USD750,000. Eligible applicants must be registered companies in Sudan with at least two years of investment experience in agriculture. The project, initiated in April and set to run until July 15, entails screening by economic experts, with selected companies receiving funding upon signing financing agreements. AECF's partner, 249Startups, will provide training, guidance, and capacity building. While the grant is non-refundable, ongoing monitoring and evaluation by the donor organization and partners will ensure project success, with funding installment contingent on project performance.
