Saudi Arabia has achieved self-sufficiency in fig production, with annual output surpassing 28,000 tonnes from 1,421 hectares of land, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA) reported. Jazan and Riyadh lead in production, contributing 9,906 and 8,010 tonnes respectively, followed by Asir with 3,970 tonnes and Makkah with 1,635 tonnes. Other contributing regions include Hail, Al-Jouf, Al-Baha, Qassim, Najran, Tabuk, Madinah, and the Northern Border, with varying production levels. The fig production season runs from February to November, featuring varieties like Madani, Turkish, Waziri, Kadota, and White King. Figs offer health benefits such as preventing Alzheimer’s, regulating blood pressure, and enhancing bone, hair, and skin health. The ministry aims to enhance fig production, processing, and marketing through its Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, promoting local fruit diversity and supporting farmers. Local farmer Bassam Al-Haboub, who planted 1,200 fig trees in two years, emphasized the importance of high-quality soil and water, and has successfully marketed his produce. He praised MEWA for organizing festivals that help farmers showcase their products and access support services.
