In 2023, Israeli attacks on Palestinian water supplies constituted a significant portion of global water-related violence, according to the Water Conflict Chronology tracker. Throughout the year, Israeli settlers, often supported by or working with the Israel Defense Forces, targeted Palestinian water infrastructure in the West Bank. Over 90 instances were reported, including the contamination and destruction of wells, pumps, and irrigation systems. Notable incidents included the poisoning of olive groves near Qalqilya and the demolition of water facilities and homes in November. In Gaza, Israeli military actions further devastated water infrastructure, including the destruction of a key wastewater treatment plant serving 1 million people. Peter Gleick, co-founder of the Pacific Institute, highlighted a global surge in water-related violence, with the Middle East particularly affected.
