In Algiers, Ibtissem Mahtout and Amira Messous are breaking new ground in Algeria's predominantly male agricultural sector with their pioneering eco-friendly smallholding near Douaouda, 30 kilometers west of the capital. Graduates in plant ecology and biodiversity, they cultivate one of the country's few ecological plots, eschewing pesticides and harmonizing their farming practices with the ecosystem. Despite initial challenges integrating into a male-dominated field—where only four percent of registered workers in Tipaza province are women—they've gained respect from male counterparts who appreciate their education and dedication. Starting with minimal funds and support from Torba, an organization promoting ecological farming, they've grown their operation to employ full-time and seasonal workers. Leveraging social media, particularly Instagram and WhatsApp, they market their seasonal fruits and vegetables directly to customers, fostering a loyal clientele. Their presence at a local educational farm in Zeralda not only supports community nutrition with healthy produce but also serves as a hub for agricultural education and cultural events, highlighting their commitment to sustainable farming and community engagement.
