Despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, global grain production is anticipated to rise by 8 million tons year-on-year in 2024, according to the head of the International Association of Operative Millers Eurasia, Eren Gunhan Ulusoy. The conflict between these leading wheat-exporting nations caused fluctuations in global food prices last year, with significant spikes in wheat prices due to production and logistics disruptions following the war's onset in February 2022. Ulusoy noted that solutions like the Black Sea Grain Initiative helped address these issues, facilitating the resumption of exports. However, Russia's production projections for the upcoming season currently stand at around 83 million tons, reflecting a decline of approximately 8 million tons due to recent adverse weather conditions. Regarding Turkey's wheat production, Ulusoy highlighted a record level of production over the past seven years, reaching 22 million tons in 2023. Despite expectations of a slight dip to 21 million tons this year due to dry and hot weather conditions, particularly in the Central Anatolia region, Ulusoy emphasized that it would still surpass production averages of previous years. Turkey, the world's largest flour exporter for nine consecutive years, achieved a new flour export record of 3.7 million tons in 2023, generating $1.5 billion. Ulusoy expressed industry stakeholders' consensus that flour exports in 2024 would exceed 4 million tons.
