In Afghanistan, climate change impacts, including unpredictable rain and snow patterns, rising temperatures, and an ongoing drought, have severely affected farmers. With 80% of the population relying on agriculture for their livelihoods, smallholder farmers are facing challenges due to unpredictable weather patterns, resulting in a drop in national agricultural production. The country is experiencing its third consecutive year of drought, leading to acute hunger for half the population.
To address these challenges, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) has introduced the GROW initiative, focusing on microforests as a nature-based solution to combat climate change and support communities in earning livelihoods. Inspired by the Miyawaki method, GROW microforests are small, biodiverse forests fostering climate resilience by sequestering carbon and creating habitats for wildlife.
In Afghanistan, GROW microforests have been introduced in high-altitude mountains, providing food, fodder, and medicinal plants to help farmers diversify their livelihoods and cope better with climate change. The initiative involves women in planting and managing microforests, contributing to family food security and income. Despite challenging sociopolitical circumstances, the project has provided opportunities for women, supporting their well-being and reframing their roles in the community.
